Integrating Technology for Optimal Wellbeing

A central part of MindFit’s vision is to improve wellbeing in the world. Considering the impact of technology on wellbeing, there’s been a shift as people become more aware of the harmful effects of increased screen time.

Research has connected mobile device usage to compromising mental health, particularly noting that depression rates are influenced by time spent on social media . Additionally, it revealed how smartphone usage decreases inhibition and attentional capacity, key aspects of executive functioning.

Our ability to exert control over our mental resources is vital to wellbeing. These findings are troubling, especially if technology compromises our attention. Without control over our focus, improving our cognition becomes challenging.

Despite these issues, MindFit® is not anti-technology.

We believe there’s a healthy balance, where rejecting technology isn’t necessary. It’s clear that screens are here to stay. We must learn to live with them, in a non-sabotaging manner. We must recognize the importance of integrating technology into our lives in a healthy manner.

The crucial challenge today is developing self-agency in our relationship with tech usage. If we can’t make conscious decisions about how we use technology, we risk being at the mercy of the latest app.

But how do we get ourselves to make conscious decisions? It starts with awareness.

Evaluating Technology Usage

To moderate technology usage, start by assessing its current impact on your life. Consider the following questions:

  • How much time do I spend looking at a screen? Is it mainly my phone, TV, or computer?
  • What am I using technology for? Which applications are used most often?
  • What times of day are occupied by technology use?

Next, dive deeper:

  • How does my current level of technology usage affect my wellbeing?
  • Do I feel in control of my screen time?
  • How do I feel after using my phone, TV, or computer?
  • Do I neglect responsibilities or get distracted due to technology?

After an honest assessment, you can begin to integrate technology in a way that aligns with your wellbeing and goals. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s crucial to develop your own sense of what works best.

If you struggle identifying your strengths and weaknesses, start by taking the mental fitness test.

3 Rules for Successfully Integrating Technology with Your Life

Coming up with, and implementing, guard rails is a great first step to a healthy relationship with technology. Here are three areas we believe everyone should prioritize and strive to protect.

Rule #1: Protect Your Sleep

  • Sleep is crucial for physical and mental health.
  • Reduce screen time in the hours before sleep.
  • Use this time to unwind and engage in non-tech activities.
  • Aim for a technology curfew 2 hours before bed. Any buffer time is beneficial.
  • Use blue light reduction apps if you need to stay online in the evening.

Rule #2: Protect Your Energy

  • Evaluate how you feel after using technology.
  • Cut back or eliminate applications that leave you frustrated or upset.
  • Replace unhealthy apps with healthier options.
  • Manage notifications to avoid constant reminders.
  • Rest and recovery are not achieved through “infinite scrolling.” Avoid scattering your energy.

Rule #3: Protect Your Attention

  • Short forms of media can reduce your attention span.
  • Disable unwanted notifications during deep work.
  • Limit time spent on short-form media.
  • Engage in activities requiring longer attention spans, like watching movies, dining with friends, or phone calls.

How to Use Technology to Your Advantage

While certain types of technology can be more taxing on wellbeing, regaining control over screen time can make technology a powerful tool for enhancing your life. Here are just a few:

  • Automation: Automate routines with reminders and automated payments.
  • Creativity: Use platforms to share creative work and find inspiration.
  • Documentation: Utilize word processing apps as endless notepads.
  • Communication: Manage electronic communications efficiently with set response times.
  • Education: Access extensive information for school, hobbies, or projects. The world’s knowledge is clicks away.

By implementing these advantages and moderating existing tech habits, you can move closer to your wellbeing goals. As technology develops, make sure to play an active role in deciding its influence on your life. This proactive approach will protect and enhance your mental fitness.

Technology is not inherently bad. In fact, it does wonders of good. We must adapt and learn to live with it, in a healthy way that works for us.
